Why Does Cancer Matter to Me

Cancer. A word that carries weight, evokes fear, and yet unites millions across the world. It is a disease that does not discriminate—it touches lives regardless of age, gender, or background. For some, cancer is a distant concern, a medical condition they hear about in the news. But for many, it is deeply personal. It is the empty chair at the dining table, the scars that tell a survivor’s story, the loved one in a hospital bed, or even the battle within our own bodies.

As we mark World Cancer Day, we ask a simple yet profound question: Why does cancer matter to you?

A Personal Connection

For many of us in Pink Unity, a support group for women cancer survivors under the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), cancer is not just a statistic. It is our lived reality. We are survivors, warriors, caregivers, and advocates. We have experienced firsthand the physical, emotional, and financial toll that cancer brings. We have seen our bodies change, endured treatments that tested our strength, and navigated the uncertainty of life after diagnosis.

Cancer matters because it changes everything. It challenges us to confront our mortality, but it also teaches us resilience. It reminds us to cherish every moment and to find purpose in the face of adversity. Many of us turn our pain into purpose by supporting those still fighting, ensuring that no one walks this journey alone.

At Pink Unity, we support each other through our P.I.N.K initiatives:

• P is for Peer Support, where we uplift and empower one another.

• I is for Inner Strength, helping survivors regain confidence and emotional well-being.

• N is for Networking, connecting members to share experiences and resources with other survivors, family members and society  at large

• K is for Knowledge, providing education and awareness to navigate life after cancer.

A Community Affected

Cancer does not only affect individuals—it affects entire families and communities. A diagnosis can bring financial strain, emotional distress, and lifestyle changes that ripple through families. Children become caregivers, partners become pillars of strength, and friendships are tested and deepened.

This is why support networks like Pink Unity exist. We understand that healing is not just about medicine; it is about emotional well-being, self-care, and a strong support system. We provide a safe space for survivors to share, heal, and empower each other, proving that life after cancer is not just about survival but about thriving.

A Global Challenge

Globally, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death, but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable diseases. With early detection, improved treatments, and better awareness, many lives can be saved. However, access to cancer care is still unequal. In some communities, a cancer diagnosis is a death sentence due to a lack of medical resources, financial constraints, or cultural stigma.

This is why World Cancer Day matters. It is a call to action—not just for medical professionals or policymakers, but for every one of us. It is a reminder that awareness, early detection, and research funding can change lives. That by advocating for better healthcare policies, supporting cancer organizations, and simply educating ourselves and others, we can make a difference.

Why Cancer Should Matter to Everyone

Cancer matters because it is not just about those who have it; it is about all of us. Whether you have been directly affected or not, we all have a role to play. You can support a friend going through treatment, encourage regular health screenings, donate to cancer research, or even share a message of hope.

So, why does cancer matter to you?

Perhaps it is because of a loved one who fought bravely, a survivor who inspires you, or the realization that no one should battle cancer alone. Whatever your reason, let it drive you to act, to care, and to support the fight against cancer—not just today, but every day.

This World Cancer Day, let’s stand together as a community. Because when we unite, we make a difference. When we speak up, we create awareness. And when we support each other, we bring hope.

Together, we are stronger. Together, we can make cancer matter.

We are warriors determined to live a fulfilling and meaningful life while living with cancer.
