Health Minister YB Datuk Seri Dr. Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad Calls for Sustainable Healthcare Financing at World Cancer Congress 2024 in Geneva

Geneva, September 18, 2024 — Malaysia’s Health Minister, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad, underscored the pressing challenges in healthcare financing during his address at the prestigious World Cancer Congress 2024, held in Geneva. The event, which brought together global leaders and experts in cancer care, saw the Minister emphasize the growing financial pressures faced by the healthcare sector, citing rising costs, inefficiencies, and the need for sustainable funding.

In his speech, Dr. Dzulkefly outlined a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing these financial challenges, proposing a multi-faceted approach that includes increased governmental funding, better budget management, and the introduction of innovative financing models. He stressed that such measures are crucial to ensuring equitable healthcare access for all, particularly in the face of increasing healthcare demands.

“We must work towards a future where healthcare is not just accessible, but also sustainable. Rising costs are a global issue, and Malaysia is committed to finding solutions that ensure everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, can access quality healthcare,” Dr. Dzulkefly said.

The World Cancer Congress 2024, organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), is one of the largest global platforms for cancer advocacy, knowledge sharing, and collaboration. During the event, Dr. Dzulkefly was seen alongside UICC President Prof. Jeff Dunn, President of the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) Dato’ Dr. Saun, and NCSM Managing Director Dr. Muralitharan.

The Minister’s call for reform comes at a critical time when global healthcare systems are facing unprecedented challenges due to rising cancer incidences, making it imperative to explore new models of healthcare financing.
